South Morang Railway Station

South Morang is a railway station opened 22 April 2012 as an extension of the Epping railway line in South Morang, Victoria, Australia. Funding was allocated in the 2009 state budget, and construction of the extension from Epping began in 2010. A campaign promise was made to rebuild the station made when the Bracks Labor government first came to power in 1999. Upon completion, the line became the South Morang railway line.

History

Stopping Place No.39 was the original South Morang station, a single platform at McDonalds Road on the Whittlesea line. Operated with DERMs, the Victorian Railways closed off the line beyond Lalor Station in the 1950s, after the electrification of the line to Lalor. Epping Station was then re-opened in the 1960s with the electrification of that section of the line, and the remaining section of track from Epping to Whittlesea was dismantled, with the former right-of-way remaining intact. All that remained of the original station was the platform mound.
